A new era begins on the Kiel-Gothenburg route -
Kiel welcomes “Stena Germanica III”
A new era has begun at Kiel’s Schwedenkai cruise and ferry terminal. From today, the ferry “Stena Germanica III” replaces her predecessor on the route between Kiel and Gothenburg. At an on-board reception, Kiel’s Lord Mayor Torsten Albig welcomed the ship and her crew to the port city and handed over the traditional first-call placard to Captain Wiggo Lander. “The ships of the Stena Line have been Kiel landmarks for more than four decades”, Torsten Albig said, “and the introduction of the new “Stena Germanica III” will make the friendly ties between Kiel and Gothenburg even stronger”. Prospects good for Kiel cargo hub -
Ostuferhafen handling every second ton
Dr. Jörn Biel beim Fernsehinterview im OstuferhafenKiel’s commercial port is well on track and will continue to profit from the above-average cargo volume growth being recorded in the Baltic. That’s the opinion of both Dr Jörn Biel, General Manager of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Kiel (IHK) and Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co KG). Kiel’s commercial port, which posted double-digit growth in the first half of this year, was a focus of attention at this year’s IHK Maritime Press Conference. Dr Jörn Biel said “the maritime economy has picked up steam again on the back of strong German foreign trade. Efficient seaports play a key role in the fast, secure and ecologically advantageous development of logistic services”, he added. The biggest cargo handler on the Kiel Fiord is the Ostuferhafen, which was developed into a freight hub in four costruction stages. Today, every second ton of cargo moving through Kiel is handled in the Ostuferhafen.

Kiel cargo handling rises 13.4% in first half year -
Best-ever handling result for Kiel’s Ostuferhafen

The Ostuferhafen handled more cargo than any other part of the port and posted its best results since going into operation 25 years ago. Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG) said “every second ton of freight moving through Kiel is currently handled in the Ostuferhafen. The capacity utilisation of the Ostuferhafen has in the meantime risen to more than 80%, which underscores the need to expand capacity there medium term in the direction of the former Ortopedia site”. Instrumental in the harbour’s growth have been the ferry services to and from the Baltic, Russia and Scandinavia as well as container transport, which began just last year.

Kiel nearly reaches 2008 handling mark -
Successful launch of container traffic adds to port versatility
Despite the difficult economic climate, the Port of Kiel handled 4.86 million tons of cargo in 2009, nearly reaching its 2008 handling figure of 4.91 million tons. However, individual business sectors developed in different ways. Dirk Claus, MD of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co KG) said “our partners and customers also responded well to the difficult economic situation. Kiel can already boast a broad pallet of activity and that is what made the almost balanced 2009 cargo handling result possible. In addition the successful launch of container services has made the port even more versatile than before”. Kiel was in fact even able to show a small increase in the passenger transport sector

Handling declines 5% in first half year -
New port mobile crane spearheads entry to container sector

The Port of Kiel handled 2.36 million tons of cargo in the first half of this year, 5% less than in the same period of 2008. Above-average decline was recorded in the breakbulk sector, which was comparatively hard hit by the current economic crisis. Against this background the positive handling trend in ferry traffic since the second quarter has been particularly pleasing. In June breakbulk handling also reached the level of the previous month. Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co KG), said “in the wake of a weak first quarter, one main contributor to handling which is now again showing a positive trend was our entry into the container handling sector. Given the general economic situation, we can be satisfied with this handling result”.

Passenger totals rise, but cargo volume dips

In contrast, however, the affects of the global financial crisis have left their mark on the cargo sector and led to a decline in Kiel’s handling results. “Passenger and cargo traffic developed in different ways last year. We just missed the 5 million ton mark in cargo handling, but at the same time we can look back on the port’s highest passenger totals for ten years. Given the current global economic situation, it’s a good thing that we are so multi-faceted in the Port of Kiel.
