Hinterland connections
Because of Kiel’s favourable geographical location and excellent transport links, destinations elsewhere in Germany and in neighbouring countries can be reached within a day.
Sea
Kiel boasts very efficient port facilities with more than 20 cargo ship departures every week on liner shipping routes to and from Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic.
Intermodal transport
A wide range of tri-modal handling possibilities are available in the Port of Kiel, at intermodal facilities on the Ostuferhafen and at the Norwegenkai.
Rail
The port also offers double-track, fully electrified railway connections to the national and international rail networks.
Road
It’s just a hop to Germany’s A7, A210 and A215 motorways which means fast sea trade and intermodal follow-through delivery services as well as efficient road haulage round trips.
Inland waterways
Because of its location directly on the Kiel Canal, Kiel is the only Baltic Sea port through which inland waterway vessels of any size, draught and height can reach the Lower Elbe and the German and pan-European inland waterway networks.
Airports
Kiel’s local airport, Kiel-Holtenau, offers flights when needed to a variety of national and international airports.
